Introducing Trotter

Trotter is a levitating, voice and gesture controlled globe. Users can interact with Trotter to explore and learn about different geographical areas around the world. Data about a specific region or location will be presented to the user upon their request. Users are also able to rotate and manipulate the orientation of Trotter with gesture commands. Trotter is designed with a focus on ease of use and accommodating people with disabilities. Ultimately, Trotter will serve as a means to educate users about different areas around the world in a fun and exciting way!



About the Project

Morris Cerullo World Evangelism has requested for a levitating globe that users may interact with to explore and learn about different regions of the world. The user will be able to use non-contact methods, such as gesture and voice commands, to navigate the globe and select areas of interest. Information about the area will be collected through various API sources which will be stored on a local database. The Raspberry Pi 3 will then present the information on an external display while the globe rotates to the location selected by the user.

For this project, we conjured up two solutions and chose to pursue both. One is a physical globe, and the other is a virtual globe. The physical and virtual globe share many of the same hardware and software components relating to user interaction via gesture and voice commands. However, they differ in their presentation of the globe to the user. The physical globe uses an actual globe that is suspended above a levitating base while the virtual globe uses a projector, a fisheye lens, and an acryclic sphere to display the image of the globe.
